Goodluck Jonathan: Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan rejected a presidential nomination form, stating that it was purchased without his consent.
A group of supporters from northern Nigeria had bought nomination forms for Jonathan to take constituent in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party’s primary elections scheduled for later this month.
The form was for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) that defeated Mr Jonathan in 2015 after he had been in power for five years.
It is common for Nigerian politicians switch sides during elections, but it would have been a surprising about-turn if the APC had decided to adopt a candidate it once derided as incompetent when he was president.
But according to a statement by the president’s former spokesperson, Mr. Jonathan “was not aware of this offer and did not authorize it”.
“We desire to state that if the former president wanted to contest an election, he would make his intentions clear to the public and will not enter through the back door,” it said.
Nigeria’s main political parties are required to hold their primaries later this month to meet the election commission’s dateline of 3 June for the submission of their candidates for the February 2023 election.
