Job Description

The Application Engineer Intern will have responsibility for supporting, designing, and reviewing our product applications with the engineering team. The Applications Engineering intern will primarily support our Motion business in our Frankfort facility, but may also have assignments in our Tinley Park facility, approximately 5 miles away.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviews product applications design for compliance with engineering principles, customer contract requirements and related specifications.
  • Reviews/designs product into customer applications using ITW Tools (i.e.: gear trax, working models, time studies, and kinematics, etc.).
  • Reviews customer / ITW designs for tooling and product functional feasibility, where applicable. Presents results to customer.
  • Addresses any product or applications issues or concerns with the customer as they arise.
  • Prepares new product cost breakdown with the support of operations.
  • Coordinates and performs activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and resolving engineering design and test problems.
  • Assists in the evaluation and approval of design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.
  • Manages and leads typical/minor projects by applying the APQP process with a cross functional team.
  • Applies ITW Toolbox to assure proper execution of projects from the design to manufacturing.
  • Creates detailed budget and controls expenditures within limitation of project budget.
  • Assists and understands the corrective action process related to manufacturing and design.
  • Secures competitive tooling quotes, sources new tools and tracks tool build timing to assure due dates are met for new products or product evolutions (including customer funded tooling CAPEX).
  • Responsible for data transfers between customers and suppliers.
  • Interact with customers and vendors through the phases of current product application design and for manufacturing process as new products are developed and launched.
  • Supports the customer and builds customer relationship while addressing their product/application needs.
  • Learns from Applications Managers and Engineer(s) to apply design, product and applications expertise, testing, etc.
  • Through applications support, seeks and identifies product improvement and evolution opportunities.
  • Supports/participates in DFMEA and DVP&R creation for new products.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Student pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Engineering Technology preferred
  • Working knowledge of CAD (SolidWorks or CATIA)
  • Excellent organization and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word and Excel
  • Project Management experience preferred
  • Knowledge of the automotive industry
  • Understanding of plastic injection molding, tooling and assembly process
  • 80/20 mindset and understanding
  • Ability to convert customer specifications to value added solutions
  • Leadership skills
  • Self-starter
  • Strong Mechanical aptitude
